Skating Polly:
Over the past decade, few artists have embodied the unbridled freedom of punk like Skating Polly. Formed when stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 14, the Oklahoma-bred band have channeled their chameleonic musicality into a sound they call “ugly pop,” unruly and subversive and wildly melodic. With Kelli’s brother Kurtis Mayo joining on drums in 2017, they’ve also built a close-knit community of fans while earning the admiration of their musical forebears, a feat that’s found them collaborating with icons like X’s Exene Cervenka and Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson, touring with Babes In Toyland, and starring as the subject of a feature-length documentary. On their double album Chaos County Line, Skating Polly reach a whole new level of self-possession, ultimately sharing their most expansive and emotionally powerful work to date.
Nina Nastasia:
Riderless Horse is my first solo album and my first without my late partner, Kennan Gudjonsson. After my sixth record, Outlaster (2010), I stepped away from music, worn down by chaos, mental illness, and a destructive relationship. For 25 years, Kennan and I shared a life and a small New York apartment that was both a creative hub and a site of decay. When I finally chose to leave, he died by suicide the next day.
This album bears that grief, but it also holds moments of strength and rediscovery. Made with longtime friends Steve Albini and Greg Norman in a quiet guesthouse in Esopus, NY, the recording process was restorative, full of honesty, laughter, and connection.
Terrible things happen. Riderless Horse is the sound of living through them, finding humor and truth, and reclaiming music as joy.
Black Ends:
Seattle-based "gunk pop" outfit Black Ends has a strong local presence in the PNW and has opened for acts such as Bikini K*ll, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Lambrini Girls, and Otoboke Beaver. Their debut record "Psychotic Spew" was released in fall 2024 to critical acclaim from outlets like Bandcamp Daily, KEXP, Seattle Times, Flood Magazine, and New Noise Magazine. They were recently featured as an Artist to Watch in 2025 in Alt Press Magazine. They are embarking on a full US and UK/EU tour this spring with summer festival dates to follow. The band is very proud of being Black and queer-fronted. BLACK ENDS IS GUNK POP.
