Det har gått tio år sedan Frédéric Gies visade maratonsolot Dance is Ancient på Weld – men det känns som igår. Sedan dess har Gies skapat en rad koreografier som aldrig tidigare visats här: samarbetet med Manuel Pelmus, en tribut till Kurt Jooss klassiska The Green Table, samt flera solon som turnerat både i Sverige och internationellt – verk vi länge önskat presentera. Nu samlar vi fem av dessa solon och avslutar med premiären av den nya koreografin Dans (Sverige) – solo template version.

Tribute to Kurt Jooss’ Green Table (2025)
Manuel Pelmuș och Frédéric Gies återupptar Kurt Jooss banbrytande antikrigsbalett The Green Table (1932), en skarp kommentar till diplomatiens meningslöshet inför fascism och krig. Deras hyllning – framförd som ett solo av Gies och med hänvisning till Jooss ursprungliga koncept – inleder en kritisk dialog med verket och engagerar sig i dess koreografiska vokabulär och politiska angelägenhet.
Traditionen med Danse Macabre, där Döden dansar med människor från alla samhällsklasser, spelar en central roll. Pelmuș och Gies knyter an till denna bildvärld för att spegla vår tids splittrade världsordning, där fredsförhandlingar ofta fungerar mer som kontrollmekanismer än som verkliga vägar till lösning.

Deflecting Misfortune and Averting the Evil Eye (2024)
Deflecting Misfortune and Averting the Evil Eye föreslår en översättning av anasyrma, den antika rituella praktiken att blotta sina skinkor eller könsorgan, till dans. Anasyrma, som är kopplad till flera antika religiösa kulter, tillskrivs en skyddande och magisk funktion. Praktiken har även tagit form i olika samtida protestuttryck. Föreställningen hyllar olika dans- och feministiska performance och undersöker relationen mellan det poetiska och det politiska.

Verket hade premiär i Maison de la Danse i Malmö den 4 maj 2024. Presenterades även på MARC, Brådjupa Festival och i en dubbelföreställning med Ania Nowak på Maison de la Danse.

It has been ten years since Frédéric Gies performed his marathon solo Dance is Ancient at Weld – but it feels like yesterday. Since then, Gies has created a series of choreographies never before seen here: his collaboration with Manuel Pelmus, a tribute to Kurt Jooss’s classic The Green Table, and several solos that have toured both in Sweden and internationally – works we have long wished to present. Now we are bringing together five of these solos and concluding with the premiere of the new choreography Dans (Sverige) – solo template version.

Tribute to Kurt Jooss’ Green Table (2025)
Manuel Pelmuș and Frédéric Gies revisit Kurt Jooss’s seminal antiwar ballet The Green Table (1932) on the futility of diplomacy in the face of fascism and war. Their tribute—performed as a solo by Gies in reference to Jooss’s original concept—enters into a critical dialogue with the piece, engaging with its choreographic vocabulary and political urgency. The tradition of the danse macabre, where Death dances with members of all classes, plays a central role in this. Pelmuș and Gies address today’s fractured global order, where peace negotiations often serve as performances of control rather than paths to resolution.

Deflecting Misfortune and Averting the Evil Eye (2024)
Deflecting Misfortune and Averting the Evil Eye proposes to translate the anasyrma, the ancient ritualistic practice of exposing one’s buttocks or genitals into a dance. The anasyrma, linked to various ancient religious cults, is a practice that fulfills a protective magic function. This practice has also been appropriated by diverse contemporary forms of protest. Paying tribute to various dance or feminist performances, the performance puts to the forefront the relationship between the poetic and the political.
