About the event:
Situated on the North East of Dartmoor, Moor Barton Wilding aims to create a space where humans and wildlife can thrive together.
The 120 acre site comprises a mosaic of ecologically rich habitats including wood pasture, hazel coppice, transitional edge, conifer woodland, wetland, veteran trees, wildflower glades, and closed canopy woodland.
In 2011 a large larch plantation was felled and replanted with broadleaf trees. The land was left to regenerate until around 2018 and since then the approach has been to introduce keystone and functional creatures. 5 beavers were introduced onto the land in 2022 and a small herd of Dartmoor ponies graze and browse over the winter months.
Where it’s not possible to introduce these creatures, the project aims to mimic the effects they have (or would have had) on the landscape; for example, coppicing sycamore and hazel in place of short tusk elephants and making bore scrapings with a digger.
As well as mimicking the effects of important missing animals, the project uses traditional skills and land management practices such as coppicing, hedge laying, and grazing animals. These practices increase the biodiversity of the land whilst also contributing toward keeping these ancient skills alive.
Moor Barton Wilding believes humans are part of nature and have a vital role to play in ensuring ecological restoration and thriving wildlife. It offers people countless ways to get involved with the project and rewilding including community rewilding, volunteering days/weekends, educational visits, camps, courses and beaver tours.
What to expect:
The visit will include a 1-2 hour guided walk around the site followed by tea/coffee and cake! The tour will mostly be along clear pathways and, while there may be invitations to go ‘off piste’, this will not be obligatory. A good level of mobility and reasonable fitness are required.
Facilities:
There is parking available and 3 compost loos on site with steps to access.
Parking: Drive into the woods. You'll see a ride leading beyond the gate, with a mature beech bank on the right hand side and a stand of young sitka spruce on the left. Drive down the bumpy track until you come to a parking area on the left hand side which is signposted. Alternatively park near the gate on the left and walk down the track.
