Join us in celebrating 15 years of impact as Sisters PGH, a Black trans-led organization, continues to lead the fight for equity, justice, and safety for Black and Brown trans and LGBTQIA people in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and beyond.
Founded in 2013 by Ciora Thomas, Sisters PGH has shaped the landscape of trans advocacy and activism in the region through countless protests, actions, and policy work. These efforts include leading actions at Allegheny County Jail to protest the mistreatment of transgender individuals, and organizing direct action campaigns during the 2020 uprisings following the murder of George Floyd, advocating for police reform and trans-inclusive protections. The organization has been a leading force in many protests against anti-trans legislation and bigotry, such as the protests against anti-trans speakers at the University of Pittsburgh .
Historical Context of Sisters PGH:
Sisters PGH has a storied history of providing vital resources, housing, and support services to the trans and nonbinary communities. Starting in Squirrel Hill, Sisters PGH opened its first drop-in center in 2018, but tragically lost the space to a fire in 2019. The fire, unrelated to Sisters PGH, displaced the organization and the residents of the building . Despite this setback, Sisters PGH relocated and reopened in Swissvale in 2020, where it continued to serve the community .
Now, Sisters PGH is preparing to move its operations once again, this time into downtown Pittsburgh with the opening of The Stonewall Inn, the first Black trans-led drop-in space in the heart of the city. The Stonewall Inn will provide essential services such as emergency housing, legal aid, mental health support, gender-affirming care, and more, continuing Sisters PGH’s mission to serve the most marginalized in the community.
Sisters PGH’s influence goes beyond Pittsburgh. In 2024, the organization expanded to Philadelphia by launching SistersPHL, a branch dedicated to providing similar life-saving services to the trans and nonbinary community in Philadelphia. This extension underscores the growing demand for trans-led spaces across Pennsylvania .
The Venue: Emerald City Pittsburgh
This year’s celebration will be held at Emerald City, a Black woman-owned venue in downtown Pittsburgh, owned by Khamil Bailey. This space serves as a powerful symbol of Black women’s resilience and leadership in the city, making it the perfect venue for this historic event.
Event Highlights:
• Red Carpet Experience (5:30 PM): Walk the red carpet and enjoy a stylish evening with photos and mingling before the festivities begin.
• Welcome Reception (6:00 PM - 7:00 PM): Connect with fellow supporters over hors d’oeuvres and beverages.
• Opening Ceremony (7:00 PM - 7:30 PM): Hear inspiring remarks from Ciora Thomas, founder of Sisters PGH, and other special guest speakers.
• Live Performances (7:30 PM - 8:30 PM): Celebrate with performances from local LGBTQIA artists and musicians.
• Silent Auction (6:00 PM - 9:00 PM): Bid on unique auction items with all proceeds going to support The Stonewall Inn.
• Dinner and Keynote Speech (8:30 PM - 9:30 PM): Enjoy a catered meal and listen to a keynote address from a prominent advocate in the LGBTQIA community.
• Award Ceremony (9:30 PM - 10:00 PM): Help us honor the contributions of key individuals and organizations in Pittsburgh.
Our Goal:
As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, we aim to raise $15,000 to support the ongoing work of The Stonewall Inn, our newest drop-in space in downtown Pittsburgh. With a 10-year lease secured at Emerald City, this space will provide essential services like emergency housing, legal support, mental health services, and gender-affirming care. Your support ensures that we can continue to operate and expand these crucial services.
While our goal is to raise $15,000, we would be honored to surpass this goal. The more we raise, the more we can expand our reach and provide vital resources to those who need them most.
