Sip & Learn :"Let’s Talk About Sex (Addiction)”
About this Event
Sex addiction” is a phrase we’ve all heard—usually attached to a famous name and a public scandal. But what is sex addiction, and is it a real mental health condition?
Historically, sex addiction has been labelled as an issue of morality, leading to misconceptions, stigma, and silence. Yet, sex addiction—clinically known as compulsive sexual behaviour disorder—is actually a diagnosable mental health condition. Compulsive sexual behaviour is defined by urges, thoughts, or impulses that are difficult to control, leading to behaviour that feels driven rather than intentional.
In this lecture, doctoral student Lindsey Snaychuk will examine what sex addiction is and isn’t by challenging misconceptions, exploring stigma, identifying the signs and causes, and discussing evidence-based treatment. This lecture will also review compulsive patterns more broadly and examine why these cycles are so difficult to break.
Lindsey Snaychuk is a PhD candidate in Clinical Psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University in the Addiction and Mental Health Lab. Her research focuses on the conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of compulsive sexual behaviour.
