How do animated stories engage, entertain, educate, and connect audiences?Can short-form, moving pictures express bigger ideas and affect meaningful change?Doesn't animation take a long time? Why bother?
As an artist and teacher, Isaac King has been using animation to explore societal and environmental themes for over 20 years using experimental drawn, stop-motion, and digital hybrid techniques.This lecture will outline the goals and processes of making animated stories by hand, exploring how the materials and labour of animation inform a conceptual narrative.
With video clips and behind-the-scenes footage, we’ll explore how aesthetics, timing, and sound design work together to create meaningful, relatable stories. As generative AI imagery floods our media landscape, handmade artwork stands out with all its human intent, experimentation, and imperfection.
Isaac’s award-winning short films and commercials have screened internationally at hundreds of festivals. He is a sessional instructor at OCAD U’s Experimental Animation Program and vice-president of the Toronto Animated Image Society, an artist-run centre supporting independent animation.www.isaacking.net
