About this Event
Fraudsters are deliberate. They take the time to study a system, what it checks, what it accepts, and how far they can push it before it breaks. Once they understand that, they find a way to use it so that it works in their favour.
This lecture looks at how that plays out across fraud and identity crime. How information is chosen so it holds. How identity is used to access things like housing, credit, and other forms of opportunity. It also looks at the kind of person who does this, what draws them into it, how they think through their decisions, and why they continue once they find something that works.
If you’ve ever wondered how someone can move through a system without being stopped, or how something can pass as legitimate when it is not, this lecture gives you a way to understand it.
Nathan Innocente is a professor of criminology at the University of Toronto. His work focuses on fraud, identity theft, and organizations, with research on how people use systems to gain access to housing, financial resources, and other institutional opportunities. He teaches white-collar crime, cyber crime, and the psychology of fraud for the Masters of Forensic Accounting, and his work has been published in the Canadian Journal of Criminology and Criminal Justice and Teaching Sociology.
