Police had the killer’s bloody fingerprint. So why did identifying them become the hardest part of the case?
About this Event

When an 83-year-old grandmother was found brutally murdered in a quiet Newmarket, Ontario neighbourhood, an entire community was left in shock. As fear spread through the streets during the early summer of 2004, investigators raced to find the killer before they could strike again.

At the heart of the investigation was a single, bloody fingerprint—a piece of evidence detectives believed would lead them straight to the murderer. It seemed like the breakthrough they needed. But identifying that fingerprint proved far more difficult than anyone expected. As days turned into weeks, confidence gave way to uncertainty.

The question wasn't whether the killer had left evidence behind... it was whether police could uncover the person it belonged to before the trail went cold.

Kevin Bryan spent 30 years with York Regional Police, including 15 years as a detective in the Forensic Identification Unit. Over the course of his career, he worked on more than 40 homicide investigations and testified in court as an expert witness.

Today, Kevin is a professor at Seneca Polytechnic, where he teaches forensic crime scene investigation, interviewing and communications in law enforcement. This September, Kevin will also launch his new true-crime podcast, Crime Scene Impressions. The podcast has an unexpected Sip & Learn connection: after years of thinking about starting one, Kevin met the person who would become his producer at a Sip & Learn lecture this past March.
