Course Details:

Maintaining or restoring joint range of motion (ROM) is a fundamental prerequisite for effective rehabilitation and orthotic intervention in both neurological and orthopedic patient populations. When ROM is limited by contracture or joint stiffness, optimal positioning, orthotic alignment, posture, gait, upper extremity function, transfers, and independence may be significantly affected.

This multidisciplinary session guides participants through the clinical reasoning, biomechanics, assessment considerations, and practical implementation of dynamic and static contracture management principles, including Low Load Prolonged Stretch (LLPS), static progressive positioning, tolerance-based progression, and interdisciplinary follow-up. The course emphasizes how ROM restoration or preservation supports physical therapy goals such as examination, evaluation, plan of care development, implementation, patient education, functional mobility, discharge planning, and long-term prevention of secondary complications.

Upper and lower extremity applications are discussed, including hand, wrist, elbow, knee, ankle, AFO-related alignment considerations, and stance-control orthotic reasoning when relevant to functional gait rehabilitation.
