Petra Marak, M.Div

Chaplain, Thanatologist

A co-resident of Texas and Wisconsin, Petra Marak is trained in chaplaincy and thanatology, providing spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and bereaved survivors in a variety of settings. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English professional writing and political science from Baylor University (’01), and a master’s of Divinity, with specialization in spiritual formation and discipleship, from George W. Truett Theological Seminary (’17).

Petra is a world traveler, participating in Bible Land tours to Israel, Greece, and Italy. As a board member of the non-profit organization Straw to Bread, she loves organizing and preparing undergraduate students for mission trips that train participants in how to employ their God-given gifts and educational training to help those in need. Her experiences offering spiritual and emotional support to the bereaved, terminally ill, and their families have extended as far south as the Nyakach Plateau of rural, western Kenya, and as far west as the desserts of Arizona and the bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada. Operating with the understanding that grief is not limited to culture, region, or country, Petra helps people from all walks of life face their questions of faith (“Why would God allow this and not heal?”) and of human frailty (“What more could I have done for my parent/spouse/child?”). Meanwhile, she helps her students grapple with questions about the love of God in the face of suffering, as well as the reality of the inequitable payout of hard work in a developing country versus an industrialized country such as the United States.

As one who finds great pleasure with imparting biblical truth and bolstering people’s foundational understanding of God and Scripture, Petra has served as director of Christian education in the local church, as a Sunday School teacher to primary-age children, as a youth group leader, as a DivorceCare™ group leader, and as a Bible study teacher.

A previous widow, Petra is now happily married to Ernie Marak – a carpenter and fellow minister of the gospel. Between Ernie and her late husband, Petra is the mother of 5 stepchildren, an adopted daughter, and two grandchildren – all of whom Petra joyfully claims as her own.
