Singing for Grief: After AnnunciationThursday, September 4
6:30-8 pm at Creekside UCC; downstairs in the Youth Room
106 E Diamond Lake Rd, Minneapolis
An evening of simple heart songs to help us tend our grief, non-religious and accessible to all.
***********
Our hearts are broken by the tragedy of the shooting at Annunication Church and School last week.
Especially in moments like this, our culture needs ways to process and tend our grief together, and practices to help us access that grief when we've gone numb.
Singing can be a gentle container that helps us find our feelings, and be together in community while we tend them.
We will lead an evening of songs that are simple to learn, taught call and echo, so all voices and bodies can participate. We will be singing not for performance, but rather for connection and healing. Songs will be non-religious and focused on helping us be embodied and present with one another in the midst of this tragedy.
If you would like to bring flowers or other objects for a community remembrance altar, please feel free. (Annunciation is just down the road so you could take your flower offerings over there on your way home if you like.)
Also feel free to bring pillows and blankets to make bodies comfortable.
You're also welcome to just come and listen; we will have art supplies available and candles to light in memory.
Thoughts about children attending:
We think it is important for kids to be invited to practice grief with the community and see how others around them are processing pain and harm. We know that each family locally is in its own grief process and that one size does not fit all.
We will have photos of the two children who were killed and taken from us too soon on the community altar, and we will be clear this is unfair, this is not right, this is not how the world should be. If parents think their children would be comfortable with this, we welcome them in the space. Please feel free to email [email protected] with any questions <3
Access notes: There is a large parking lot for the church. There is a ramp up to the main doors. We will be downstairs in the youth room; there is an elevator. (Note the accessible bathrooms are upstairs however.)
*Masks are highly encouraged for singing indoors as Covid cases are on the rise again. We will have some available.*
Songs will be led by Good Trouble, Conie Borchardt and Liz Digitale Anderson. We have been leading community singing for connection, courage, joy, grief, and resilience for the past several years together, and community grief-tending is one of our callings.
