About this Event

Indie bookstore The Book Stall is delighted to present an evening with Grammy-nominated artist Margo Price discussing her new memoir Maybe We'll Make It with author, journalist, and editor Jessica Hopper.

Maybe We’ll Make It is a memoir of loss, motherhood, and the search for artistic freedom amidst the agony of so many aspiring musicians: bad gigs and long tours, rejection and sexual harassment, too much drinking and barely enough money to live. Price, though, refused to break, and turned her lowest moments into the vintage country songs that eventually comprised her debut album and launched her career. In the same authentic voice hailed by Pitchfork for tackling "Steinbeck-sized issues with no-bullshit humility," Price shares the stories that became songs, and the small acts of love and camaraderie it takes to survive in an industry that is often unkind to women. Now a Grammy-nominated “Best New Artist,” Price tells a love story of music, collaboration, and the struggle to build a career while trying to maintain her singular voice and style.

Kirkus calls Maybe We'll Make It, “[An] engaging and beautifully narrated quest for personal fulfillment and musical recognition,” and adds, “This is a fast-paced tale in which music and love always take center stage.” The reviewer concludes, “A truly gifted musician, Price writes about her journey with refreshing candor."

Margo Price is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter. She has released three LPs, earned a Grammy nomination for "Best New Artist," performed on Saturday Night Live, and is the first female musician to sit on the board of Farm Aid.

Jessica Hopper is an author, producer, director, and editor of the American Music Series from the University of Texas Press. Her four-part series Women Who Rock has just been released for streaming. The author of Night Moves and The First Collection of Criticism By A Living Female Rock Critic, Jessica was formerly the Editorial Director at MTV News, and an editor at Pitchfork and Rookie. Her essays have appeared in Best Music Writing for 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2011. Her book The Girls' Guide to Rocking was named one of 2009's Notable Books For Young Readers by the American Library Association.
