COLLEGIUM MUSICALE
Collegium Musicale appears in collaboration with Estonian Music Week.
The Estonian peoples started a revolution using song that was followed by gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. These gatherings that preserved culture in the face of oppression live on as the Song Festival or Laulupidu. Experts have said the war against Ukraine relies on a belief that Ukraine does not have its own distinct culture. Award-winning Estonian choir Collegium Musicale will perform a selection of Laulupidu repertoire to show their solidarity with the people of Ukraine and in support of their right to freedom and culture. In addition, the group will perform the Canadian premiere of composer Erkki-Sven Tüür’s “Ukrainale/For Ukraine”. For those who would like to join Collegium Musicale in song, we will be posting links to the sheet music and recording of the new composition as well as a list of the classic repertoire in this event. Be sure to click ‘Going’ to get notifications! And for those who have never heard of Laulupidu, and those who would prefer just to listen, Collegium Musicale is particularly excited for you to experience this cherished part of Estonian culture.

SING WITH UKRAINE
Sing with Ukraine is a grassroots effort by Eastern European artists, started after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24th. What began as a gathering of friends processing grief together through song, has now become a journey and resistance effort through Toronto’s bars and music venues. We interrupt the pre-scheduled programming to celebrate Ukrainian identity, to show the humanity and culture of those affected, and to awaken ourselves and our city from indifference.
