Ori Shalva & co:
(pronounced Oree Shalva)
Ori Shalva, the Makharashvili singing family, don’t just perform Georgian polyphony. When they sing exploding counterpoint, harmonized rolling melismas enveloped in a velvety drone, or archaic thick sonorities accompanied by rustic folk instruments, they transcend space and time, and take you on a far-off musical journey of Sakartvelo (aka Georgia), a small and ancient mountainous country located on the borders of Asia and Europe.
Georgian polyphony is a millennia old tradition known for its distinctive and visceral harmonies and recognized by UNESCO as an intangible masterpiece of humanity. The singing family unit has played an important role in the preservation of Georgian polyphony. Singing for Ori Shalva, like most Georgian singing families, is natural, instinctive, and was originally framed by family celebrations, not staged performances. Unlike other Georgian singing families, however, they are based in Toronto, halfway around the world from the source.
Ori Shalva have sung in venues around Toronto, parts of the States, and all over Georgia. The pandemic raised their grassroots beginnings and they were featured in numerous online showcases (SING!, Community Folk Art Council, Labyrinth Ontario, BLOKMUSIC, etc).

Our repertoire includes authentic and arranged songs from Bulgaria’s diverse ethnographic regions performed a cappella or with instrumental accompaniment.

Pressgang Mutiny: Hailing from the port of Toronto, ON, Pressgang Mutiny have been roaring out songs of the sea since 2013. Local favourites in their hometown and on the Canadian and American East Coasts, they are keeping alive a vital tradition of work songs that represents the world's first truly multicultural music.
Sing with Ukraine: Sing with Ukraine is a grassroots effort by Toronto-based Eastern European artists, started after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24th. What began as a gathering of friends processing grief together through song, has now become a journey and resistance effort through Toronto’s bars and music venues. We interrupt the pre-scheduled programming to celebrate Ukrainian identity, to show the humanity and culture of those affected, and to awaken ourselves and our city from indifference.
Unaccompanied Minors: The Unaccompanied Minors is one of 6 main groups under the University of Waterloo A Cappella Club. They are a mixed-voice, auditioned group that loves delivering powerful, high-energy performances that span genres from top 40 hits, to indie, to R&B. After 2 years of online a cappella, they're ecstatic to finally be singing and performing together in-person again! You can find them on all social media platforms, including Spotify, YouTube and Instagram.
