Sunday, October 25th- Sacrilegious Cinema: Menagerie of Madness comes to a dramatic close with some of the most quintessential names in Halloween themed horror you’d be a fool to miss, with this dyad epitomizing every facet of the season at Hot Wax Coffee Shop in Ybor City. 🦇🍁👻
At 8PM, we embark on the town of Haddonfield, Illinois and follow final girl Laurie Strode in her battle against evil incarnate when an escaped mental patient in the Shape of Michael Myers returns to wreak havoc on Halloween night in John Carpenter’s 1978 classic. Among one of the most celebrated horror flicks of all time, this independent effort altered the course of the genre altogether, popularizing (although not inventing) the slasher sub-genre for years to come, drawing inspiration from predecessors such as Bob Clark’s Black Christmas (1974) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960). Halloween remains revolutionary in the archives of not just horror, but cinema as a whole- with many imitators longing to replicate the formula for a crash grab, with little able to capture that original ambience emulated in the seminal prototype. This timeless entry functions incredibly due to its effective simplicity in its restrained exposition, allowing actions to speak for themselves to elicit an air of mystery regarding the legendary Michael Myers- acting as not only an enigma, but also an emblem of evil. Beyond the spectacular direction of Carpenter himself, Halloween benefits from the phenomenally foreboding cinematography from Dean Cundey, imbuing the picture with a voyeuristic vision in its POV shots and long takes basking in the darkness where the Shape stalks in the shadows, threatening the serenity of the suburbs. Combined with the iconic score and superb sound design, Halloween becomes instantly recognizable several decades later, embedding itself into pop culture and collective consciousness for years to come. 🎃🔪🪦🤡
Then, at 10PM, we join in the autumnal festivities of sleepy Warren Valley, Ohio and face the likes of werewolves, vengeful spirits and serial killers alike to honor the tradition of Samhain in this twisted anthology of candied razor blades in TRICK R TREAT (2007). Director and writer Michael Dougherty weaves an interconnected collection of nostalgic tales echoing the atmosphere of a vintage Halloween, with the official mascot (Sam) of the holiday being in the works since the animated Season’s Greeting (1996) over a decade earlier. Trick R Treat surveys the annals of horror, crafting a catalogue of cheeky albeit mean-spirited accounts of fall appropriate terror, anchoring itself as a permanent fixture in cult cinema and solidifying as a staple amidst other Samhain set films- but beware, this one comes with a warning label to respect the customs that came before. 🍭🩸🎃🐺
