SINDHU 2023 MUMBAI


A vibrant dance festival that celebrates the spirit of innovation, passion and excellence in classical dance. Hosting legends, maestros and exponents of classical Indian dance Sindhu is most awaited yearly event in Mumbai and Pune. The festival is spearheaded and curated by the creative duo of Vaibhav Arekar and Shri Sushant Jadhav from the year 2012.


Founded in 2009 by Vaibhav Arekar, Sankhya came as a natural extension of his artistic vision. Today, with the added dynamism and vision of its co-director Sushant Jadhav, Sankhya is a formidable institution based in Mumbai.


This year, Sindhu will be held in Mumbai on 9th April 2023 at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, Bandra.


This year Sindhu festival will be hosted in the honour and memory of Late Padma Bhushan Dr. Smt Kanak Rele.


Padma Bhushan Dr Smt. Kanak Rele


Kanak Rele a renowned Mohiniattam artist, was the founder-director of the Nalanda Dance Research Centre and the founder-principal of the Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya in Mumbai. She was instrumental in beginning the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Mumbai and also served as its dean.


She is credited with having played a key role in the revival and popularisation of Mohiniyattam and for having brought a scientific temper and academic rigour to it.


She is noted for the contemporisation of mythological tales in her performances and her portrayal of strong women characters in them.

The lineup of the event is as follows:


The festival will begin with a tribute to Vaibhav's mentor Late Padma Bhushan Dr Smt Kanak Rele with a presentation -

" Kanak - the eternal Mohini"



Odissi by three exquisite dancers trained under three renowned Gurus from Mumbai.


Archana Basu


Archana Basu, senior disciple of Guru. Smt Debi Basu has established herself as a soloist and also an integral part of her Guru's dance ensemble, SANYUKTAM. She recently had the fortune of presenting Odissi in different cities of Vietnam under the aegis of Indian Council for Cultural Relations.


Mitali Raul


An accomplished Odissi classical artiste, a seasoned performer and a teacher, Mitali has toured extensively within India and abroad over the last three decades performing at

various festivals and events such as the Festival of India in Germany with Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, the Konark Festival with her Guru Smt. Jhelum Paranjape, and many more.



Dr.Prachi Jariwala


Dr. Prachi Jariwala,an accomplished Indian classical dancer from Mumbai was initiated into the world of classical dance by Kalashree Dr. Latha Surendran and to the world of Odissi dance by Smt. Daksha Mashruwala. She has been extremely fortunate to have learnt under the legendary Padmavibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.

An empanelled artist under the distinguished ICCR, she also holds a doctorate from the University of Mumbai with the thesis ‘Buddha in Ancient Indian Sculptures’.


Tridhara:

These three proficient dancers will be presenting "Tridhara" at Sindhu 2023. Exploring the exclusive training of their own Gurus they will be creating a beautiful synergy together through their own choreography in this piece.




KATHAK


Rudra Shankar MIshra


Awarded with Ustad Bismillah Khan Award and born under the lineage of "Acharya Sukhdev Maharaj Shishya Parampara" Rudra Shankar Mishra is a young and dynamic Kathak performer of Banaras Gharana who happens to be the son of Pt. Mata Prasad Mishra (UP SNA Awardee) . He has performed in many prestigious festivals in India and abroad such as: Sangeet Mela - Japan , Verkekunda Art Festival, Switzerland, Maha Kathak Utsav (Kathak Kendra & Creaticity), Pune and many more.



Vaibhav Arekar

( Bharatnatyam )


Having received a strong foundation in Bharatanatyam under Smt. Saroja Srinath, Vaibhav further strengthened his dance technique with rigorous training during Bachelor’s degree at Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, (established by Dr. Kanak Rele) and under Smt. Tangamani Nagarajan.


Vaibhav came under the tutelage of his mentor Dr. Kanak Rele from whom he received advanced training in abhinaya and performance technique.


A holistic approach to dance and the basics of Kathak received from Smt Rajashree Shirke has further defined Vaibhav’s dance. He has also undertaken extensive theatre training under Shri Chetan Datar.


Margam

Vaibhav Arekar will be presenting 'Margam' which explores the path and the process of his own journey in Bharata Natyam through the traditional repertoire. This traditional repertoire creatively unfolds relevance of the abstract and the narrative aspects of Bharata Natyam in present day.
