For the 2nd concert of their Barbican stopover, Gustavo Dudamel and his orchestra are remembering home as the vibrant Latino vibes of Riccardo Lorenz and Gonzalo Grau encounter fate-full Tchaikovsky.Gustavo Dudamel gets down and dirty with Lorenz’ Todo Terreno, an off-road adventure through his native Venezuela. Hitching a ride too is Grau’s Odisea, whose concerto odyssey travels east to west, imbibing the excitement of arrival; the nostalgia of departures; and the chaos and colours of the streets. Tchaikovsky is in more sober mood; but the third movement of his Symphony No 4 fairly fizzes with the popping corks of plucked strings, and fate ultimately meets its scurrying match.
An irrepressible force of nature Gustavo Dudamel has been hailed by The Observer as ‘quite simply the hottest new conductor for a generation’. He continues to turn up the heat and enjoys a fruitful rapport with Latin Grammy-winner Jorge Glem - in Grau’s hypnotic concerto, Glem’s 4-stringed cuatro creates ‘an amazing range of sonorities’ (The Guardian).
