Simply Appliqué: A Decorative Sewing Workshop

Ever wondered what appliqué is and how to use it to add beautiful detail to your sewing projects? This beginner-friendly class is the perfect place to explore this creative and versatile technique.

Appliqué is the art of attaching pieces of fabric onto a background fabric to create eye-catching patterns, textures, or images. It’s used in everything from clothing and quilts to wall hangings and accessories—and once you learn the basics, the possibilities are endless!

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll:

• Learn and practice three key types of appliqué:
  – Folded edge appliqué
  – Raw edge appliqué
  – Reverse appliqué
• Explore the use of various fabrics and fusible webbing
• Learn how to layer more complex designs and where to find inspiring templates
• Try your hand at basic hand-stitched appliqué techniques

To put your new skills into practice, you'll create a decorative tote bag using the appliqué methods covered—a functional and stylish way to show off your work!

Whether you’re brand new to appliqué or looking to refresh your skills, this class will give you the knowledge and confidence to add creative flair to all your future sewing projects.

Skill level : No sewing machine skills required.

What to bring:

• 1/2 metre of Calico
• 20cm of Heat & Bond (can be bought in the shop)

Janome sewing machines will be provided on the day along with a hot drink. You will also receive a 10% discount card to use in-store.

I am passionate about sewing and crafting.

I have been involved with sewing and dressmaking for all of my working life and nothing gives me greater pleasure than passing on my knowledge to people who want to learn to sew. I enjoy sewing, dressmaking, all types of craft and especially machine embroidery.

I have been working at the Abakhan store in Shrewsbury since it opened its doors in 2018.
