Simonetta Moro speaks on her new show and on drawing as a layering process that simultaneously reveals and hides
About this Event

Artist and scholar Simonetta Moro joins BFA Visual and Critical Studies and the SVA Honors Program to discuss her recent work on display in her solo show, at the Flatiron Project Space, Saturday, April 3, through Monday, May 3, 2027.

In her talk, Moro will develop some themes that are at the center of The Emerging Image , particularly in relation to water and the underworld. In Moro’s artistic practice, archaeology is understood as a method for understanding the present through the traces and ruins of the past, and drawing as a layering process that simultaneously reveals and hides.

Her painting and drawing thus form a cartography of the submerged, where recognizable figures emerge temporarily. These figures are either borrowed from the media, referencing marine archaeology and ecology in their various aspects, from the uncanny to the dreamlike, or result from a direct observation of the urban environment, where water is a key element.

Drawing on ideas from Giorgio Agamben and Michel Foucault, Moro will explore this complex layering in the work of art and in our relation to history and the natural world.

Simonetta Moro is an Italian and American visual artist, scholar, and the current President and a Professor of Art, Philosophy, and Visual Studies at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA). Her work focuses on cartographic aesthetics, painting, and the philosophical intersections of memory and place.
