From humble beginnings as a singing waiter in Queens to the man Sinatra called “the best singer in the business”, Tony Bennett’s tumultuous career spanned an astounding 70 years. On the eve of what would have been his 100th birthday, we celebrate the remarkable artist who through it all, “stayed with the great songs.”
Bennett’s peerless renditions of timeless classics such as The Best is Yet to Come and But Beautiful were exceeded only by his ability to create new standards, such as I Wanna Be Around and his signature song, I Left My Heart in San Francisco.
Tonight we celebrate Bennett’s legacy through songs and stories from a prolific career – from his breakout hit Because of You and legendary collaborations with Bill Evans and Count Basie, through to his popular Duets album with modern artists ranging from Stevie Wonder to Amy Winehouse.
