About:
Simon Brooke was a longstanding advocate of social and affordable housing in Ireland. His passion for the sector and for the provision of high-quality, affordable, secure homes for individuals and families across the country was reflected in his work over many decades.
Up until his untimely death in November 2019, Simon worked tirelessly to break the stigmas attached to social housing and to ensure that everyone in Ireland had a great place to live. Simon first supported Clúid as a board member and later became Clúid’s Head of Policy. In his various roles, Simon was a passionate supporter of the exchange of international best practice and policy in housing.
It is on this basis that the inaugural Simon Brooke Lecture was established four years ago, celebrating Simon and acting as a springboard for housing policy discussions. The first lecture, which was held online in 2021, focused on learning from international housing policy. The 2022 lecture focused on the intersection between domestic violence and housing in Ireland, while the 2023 lecture examined the topic of youth housing.
This year, we wish to examine the topic of disability and housing, with a particular emphass on the concepts of independence, autonomy and inclusion. What is the experience of housing for disabled people? What is the ideal with regard to housing for disabled people? Can Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) and Local Authorities work more effectively to ensure access to high-quality housing and enable the creation of vibrant communities for disabled people? How can the provision of housing foster real independence, autonomy and inclusion in the community for disabled people?
The event will take place at the beautiful Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts (RHA) in Dublin.
