About this Event
It is safe it say that there are few reporters who have been as savvy and articulate in reporting on the politics and personalities of New York as Joyce Purnick. That is why the governing board of the Silurians Press Club has decided to honor her with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award at a luncheon at noon March 15 at the National Arts Club.
Joyce spent more than 40 years reporting, analyzing and editing the news, particularly political news, of her native New York. For many years, she was The Times's Metro Matters columnist, receiving the prestigious Meyer Berger Award for her writing. She was also the first woman to serve as The Times’s City Hall bureau chief and its Metropolitan Editor. She was named a member of The Times's Editorial Board, and wrote the biography “Mike Bloomberg: Money, Power, Politics.'' Before joining the Times, she had a distinguished career at the New York Post and wrote New York Magazine's City Politics column. A stepmother of three and grandmother of six, she lives in Manhattan with her husband Max Frankel, the former executive editor of the Times.
Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award read like a roster of the city’s legendary journalists: beginning with Walter Cronkite, and including Gay Talese, Ken Auletta, Frank Rich, Seymour Topping, Marvin and Bernard Kalb, Gloria Steinem, Judith Crist, Murray Kempton, Pete Hamill, Punch Sulzberger and Max Frankel, as well as last year's winner, Chester Higgins.
To reserve, click on the word “TICKETS” and follow the directions. You will then receive an email confirming your reservation.
On Eventbrite you can either pay for lunch in advance (for you and guests) or just reserve your place and pay at the door. Lunch prices are $65 for members, $75 for guests. You can pay at the door by cash (exact change, please), check or credit card. If you’re bringing guests, make sure to give us your guest’s name.
A Zoom link will be available at a later date, please signup for the Zoom meeting and donate $15 on Eventbrite.
One other reminder: Because we must give a final tally to the National Arts Club at noon on March 13 — the Monday before the luncheon — we cannot cancel any reservations after that time. No-shows will be asked to pay for their seats.
