About this Event

Dear fellow Silurians:

Please join us in honoring long time New York Times photographer Chester Higgins Jr. at our Lifetime Achievement Gala on Friday March 24, 2022, at the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South. The evening begins with an open bar and appetizers at 6 P.M., followed by a three-course dinner and the award ceremony.

Now 75, Higgins spent 39 years as a staff photographer for The New York Times and became world renowned for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects around the globe. A native of Alabama and a graduate of Tuskegee Institute, he made it his mission to capture and incorporate Black life into the consciousness of the world’s mainstream. His photographs also have appeared in nearly every national news magazine, museum collections and a series of books. For a quick review of his magnificent career and the monumental scope of his work, please read the Aug. 27, 2021 New Yorker profile of him:

Tickets are $135 each for a Silurian member and for a first guest.

Seats for additional guests are $150 each.

The deadline for reservations, which must be prepaid by credit card via Eventbrite or by check, is Jan. 26, 2022. The cost to you will be essentially the same whether you pay by check or by Eventbrite, which is much easier on our organizers.

With either method, please send an email to dinner chairman Allan Dodds Frank at [email protected] with the names of all guests, along with table seating requests. If you prefer to pay by check, please mail it, with names of guests and seating request, to the Silurians President:

Michael Serrill,

315 Saint John’s Place

Apt. 3E

Brooklyn, N.Y. 11328

The dining room seats only 150, so we urge you to respond promptly.

Our venue, the National Arts Club, requires that all guests present evidence of two covid vaccinations.

If you have questions, email Allan at [email protected] or [email protected]

We look forward to sharing a terrific evening with you.
