Rabbi Löw recognizes that there is great danger for the Jewish ghetto and decides to bring the golem, an artificial human made of clay, to life. The Golem is said to avert evil. Actually the emperor announces that the Jews should leave the city. Rabbi Löw wants to change the emperor's mind and asks for an audience. This is granted to him during a festival. The rabbi takes the golem with him, and when the imperial castle threatens to collapse due to magical forces, the rabbi can prevent this with the help of the golem. In gratitude, the emperor withdraws the decree against the Jews.
