ABOUT METROPOLIS: Fritz Lang's Metropolis is a groundbreaking 1927 sci-fi epic that has profoundly influenced the course of cinema. As one of the first feature-length science fiction films, its visionary design, from the towering futuristic cityscapes to its iconic robot, shaped the visual language of the genre.
Themes of class struggle, technology, and human connection resonated deeply during its time and continue to do so today. Metropolis has inspired countless filmmakers and works, from Blade Runner to Star Wars, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of cinematic history.
Rediscovered in 2008 in a Buenos Aires cinema museum, Metropolis was painstakingly restored to its original 150-minute cut, allowing modern audiences to experience Fritz Lang’s sci-fi masterpiece as it was first envisioned.
Brett Miller, Organist
ABOUT THE ORGANIST: Brett Miller was a finalist in the American Theatre Organ Society’s Young Organist Competition and has been performing for the past ten years over the country specializing in the art of Silent film accompaniment. He has been featured with the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic at the Trenton War Memorial as well as opened for the sold-out appearance of George R.R. Martin, author of the “Game of Thrones”.
He was featured on PBS “State of the Arts” as well as in the Philadelphia Inquirer “We The People” for his organ accompaniment and preservation of silent films. Along with his brother he founded “musicalpromise.org” , a musical initiative to help fund the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Brett has received the White House Student Film Festival honorable mention for a film featuring this community service work. Prior to his present studying as an undergraduate student at the Eastman School of Music, Brett was involved in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra as well as many school-related musical organizations and was awarded for these efforts.
He is an active advocate for the education of the presentation of silent films and performing the scores to them “live to picture”. Brett continues to be involved in various organizations including Empire Film and Media Ensemble, the Garden State Theatre Organ Society, the Rochester Theatre Organ Society, the American Theatre Organ Society, and the Historic Pipe Organs at Boardwalk Hall.
ABOUT THE MIGHTY ALLEN: The Strand’s Mighty Allen Theatre Organ, a four-manual, 33-rank digital replica of a 1920s Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ, was the largest stock theatre organ produced by the Allen Company at the time it was built.
The Mighty Allen has been custom voiced to the Strand’s 530-seat auditorium by house organist Ron Carter and Allen technician Alan Buchannan. In addition to the revolutionary technology used in building this instrument, the placement of twenty-four (24) 90-pound speaker cabinets, powered by sixteen (16) 100-watt amplifiers placed in the large pipe organ chambers on each side of the Proscenium arch magnifies the realism of the theatre pipe organ sound. Additionally, the Strand instrument has a digital toy counter that activates “special effect sounds” like car horns, whistles, gun shots, train whistle, thunder and many others that are used in the accompaniment of silent film.
