Silent Clowns: Ernie Morrison and Our Gang

Sat Jun 10 2023 at 02:30 pm to 04:30 pm

New York Public Library for the Performing Arts -Bruno Walter Auditorium | New York, NY

The Silent Clowns Film Series, showcasing silent rare and overlooked films from the 1920s with live piano accompaniment.
About this Event

Silent Clowns, New York’s longest-running regularly scheduled silent film showcase, examines one of the most endearing (not to mention enduring) comedy series ever, Our Gang, which ran theatrically from 1922 to 1944, and then started a whole new lease on life as The Little Rascals on television in the 1950s. The catalyst for the series was Ernie Morrison, a talented child comedian who’s the subject of this tribute program. A special guest Ina Archer, artist and media conservator, joins us to present Ernie and the Gang in new restorations of Fire Fighters (1922), The Champeen (1923) and Dogs of War (1923).

The Silent Clowns film series reaches the serious film buff by including rarely-screened titles and rare prints, yet it also introduces kids and new audiences to the classics of the silent screen. Screenings feature live piano accompaniment by MoMA’s Ben Model, with an introduction and Q&A by film historians Model and Steve Massa.

While tickets to all events at the Library for the Performing Arts are free, seating is granted on a first come first serve basis. Five minutes before showtime, seats will be given out to people on the wait list regardless of reservation status.
