Silence Is Not Neutral: Big Brother Is Watching. Are You Voting?
What happens to democracy when ordinary people stop believing their voice matters?
Join Hap’s House for Silence Is Not Neutral, the next Book Collective Conversation. Using George Orwell’s 1984 as our starting point, we will explore how truth, information, power, language, surveillance, silence, and individual voice affect public life and democratic participation.
This is an interactive literary conversation and civic engagement experience. It is not a lecture, campaign event, political debate, or traditional book club. You do not need to have read 1984 to participate.
During the evening, guests will respond to provocative statements in The Ministry of Truth, take a position during Where Do You Stand, join a facilitated conversation called 1984 as a Mirror, explore official civic resources at From Page to Power, and complete the Silence Is Not Neutral Commitment.
The goal is to help participants think critically, prepare to vote, understand what appears on their ballots, and identify ways to remain civically engaged after Election Day. Hap’s House does not endorse or oppose any candidate or political party through this event.
Doors open at 7:30 PM for refreshments and the arrival activity. The facilitated program begins promptly at 8:00 PM and ends at 10:00 PM.
