Develop a personal language of marks, symbols, textures, and field markers inspired by memory, movement, and place.
About this Event

Before written language, people used lines, tracks, patterns, notches, and symbols to record movement, memory, territory, weather, and belonging.

In Signs We Leave, participants will explore the marks already present in their surroundings—from plant structures and street symbols to scratches, maps, repeated patterns, and personal gestures.

Through drawing, rubbing, stamping, layering, and found materials, each participant will begin developing a personal visual language. The workshop will culminate in the creation of a handmade field marker representing something the participant wants to remember, protect, question, communicate, or return to.

This is not a workshop about creating a perfect logo or polished image. It is an invitation to notice how marks carry meaning and consider what we communicate through the traces we leave behind.

Participants will explore
  • Observational mark-making
  • Personal and place-based symbols
  • Texture, repetition, and visual language
  • Rubbing, stamping, drawing, and layering
  • The relationship between identity, memory, and place

Participants will leave with
  • A personal mark library
  • A handmade field marker
  • A short reflection practice for continued observation

No previous art experience is required. Primary materials are included.
