The Nevada County Library is pleased to announce a special poetry reading event in honor of local poet, sculptor and renaissance man, Richard Gill. This event will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 1 PM to 2 PM at the Madelyn Helling Library.Celebrating Richard Gill’s contribution to the arts, this gathering will highlight his sculpture series "Signs of Our Times," which has been exhibited at the Madelyn Helling Library for several months. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to explore the intersection of visual art and poetry, as each sculpture in the series corresponds with poems written by Gill.
The event will feature readings by notable local poets and artists including Dan Scanlan, Chris Olander, Michael Clarity, and See Lee, who will breathe life into Gill’s words, allowing patrons to experience his sculptures through the lens of his poetic expressions.
“Signs of Our Times” was devised by Richard to be a social commentary on the state of the modern world and offers viewers both hopeful insights and a serious look into the consequences of environmental and political degradation.
This poetry reading is not only a tribute to Richard Gill's artistic legacy but also an invitation for community members to engage with the arts in a meaningful way. The event is free to the public, promising an inspiring hour of culture and community.
Richard Gill, passed away peacefully in 2023 at the age of 94, was a longtime member of the Nevada County community. Well known for his “Medicine Man” shows at the narrow-gauge rail line, Richard loved the arts and performing for people of all ages.
