Significant Ink: Newcastle brings you a free writing workshop with Ilisha Thiru Purcell at Star and Shadow Cinema. You could have some experience writing poetry or you could be brand new! Places are open to people who are 18+ and are part of the Global Majority (click for the definition if you are unsure).

About the Workshop Facilitator: Ilisha Thiru Purcell
Ilisha Thiru Purcell is an award-winning Sri Lankan-Scottish poet. She was part of the inaugural Poets of Colour Incubator Programme and was a Young Creative Associate with New Writing North. Ilisha was shortlisted for the James Berry Prize 2024 and was a Poet in Residence at the 2025 StAnza Poetry Festival, winning the Futurist Award. Ilisha won a commission to perform at the 2023 Newcastle Poetry Festival and was shortlisted for Nine Arches' Primers Volume 7. Her work has appeared in publications such as 𝘉𝘪+ 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺, 𝘉𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳'𝘴 𝘋𝘰𝘨, 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘳, and 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘥 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺. In her stunning debut pamphlet 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘪𝘥 (Verve Poetry Press, 2025), Ilisha reworks and revivifies the millennia old Tamil poetic practice of Thinnai – the poetics of a codified landscape – transplanting it to her home environment in the North East of England. Her poetry collection was the 2025 Poetry Book Society Autumn Pamphlet Choice. She lives in Newcastle upon Tyne.
