Sightlines: Photography by Kelly Corder, Sarmad AlMouallem & Tom Lackey
What draws us to a photograph? A familiar place, a fleeting connection, an object that carries the marks of someone’s life?
Sightlines brings together three photographers whose different experiences shape how they see and document the world.
For Campbell River photographer Kelly Corder, photography began with glimpses into his grandfather’s darkroom and his mother’s love of telling stories through family photographs. Working in both film and digital, Kelly’s practice is rooted in that early curiosity, later encouraged by his work with Vancouver Island artists.
Born and raised in Damascus and originally from Maaloula, Sarmad AlMouallem now calls Campbell River home, where he runs Phototech Fotosource. His photographs follow the moments that catch his attention: a backyard flower, a street encounter in Lisbon, portraits of friends and scenes gathered through travel. Moving between candid and carefully composed images, film and digital, his work explores humanity, connection and memory.
Tom Lackey has been creating photographic images for more than forty years. His practice centres on tools and working environments, preserving the traces of people who have used and eventually left them behind. Currently focusing on Vancouver Island’s fishing and logging worlds, Tom invites viewers to consider the lives suggested by these objects and spaces.
Visit the Tidemark Lobby Gallery to explore these perspectives through SIGHTLINES, on display until October 30.
