? What is shuffle dance/cutting shapes?Shuffle dance is a footwork based dance that is characteristic to electronic music cultures. Cutting shapes is a similar dance style that has the same ancestor as shuffle dance - drop foot/UK shuffle. In these Shuffle & Shapes classes we will combine both styles together, mix and merge while learning about the differences of these styles. Shuffle dance is characterized by intricate footwork and ‘shuffling’ one’s feet on the floor while moving around. Cutting shapes is characterized by double tempo footwork movements and lots of hip-twisting. Both styles are intense and danced to Electronic Dance Music.
? Beginner level
No (dance) experience is needed for the beginner level classes, we will learn everything from 0. In beginner classes we learn the foundation and fundamentals of both Shuffle & Shapes. The tempo in these classes is kept lower than usual, around 80-115bpm.
? What to know before joining shuffle dance classes?
For shuffle & shapes classes we suggest that you asses your overall physical fitness before joining the classes. Since this dance style is quite intense and requires cardio as well as basic level muscle strength, we want to inform you beforehand to avoid any unwanted injuries.
Please wear comfortable clothes and inside (flat soled) sneakers for the class, sweating is guaranteed. Bring a water bottle.
? About your teacher Johanna Karjus
Johanna is the founder of Spirit Studio. She started shuffling in 2019 in Amsterdam when her friend Josefine introduced her to this dance. Only 1 year into shuffling Johanna started passing on her knowledge and passion to others who were interested in this dance. In 2021 she started teaching in a dance school and when she moved to Estonia is 2022 she set herself a goal to promote this dance in Estonia as well. She continued teaching in different dance schools and now is on a next journey with her own studio.
Johanna is also very active in the international shuffle community, teaching in different countries in Europe as well as participating/organizing/judging shuffle/shapes tournaments.
Johanna believes that shuffling is a way to express, connect and to be present. Shuffle classes are the place where people can feel accepted, challenged, heard and free to express themselves.
