Join the IUCC DEI Committee for a special screening of The Reenactment of Doss v. Bernal, 80 Years Later, a powerful new documentary by our own Eli Reyna. This film revives the often-overlooked story of Alex and Esther Bernal, a courageous Mexican American couple who, in 1943, contested a racial restrictive covenant that prohibited “Mexicans” from living in their newly purchased Fullerton, California, home. Their brave case marked a landmark victory, challenging the legal framework that upheld segregationist practices.

In this moving reenactment, two distinguished Mexican American judges, who share roots in the same neighborhoods as the Bernals, revisit the original courthouse and reflect on their own experiences. Their stories reveal how the legacy of this case still resonates today, echoing ongoing challenges and hard-won progress in the fight for equal rights.
