A small voice told Gustave Baumann to go west, and he took the message to heart. Beginning with his 1918 arrival in Santa Fe, Baumann used his keen eye to capture shimmering details, subtle beauty, and the Southwest’s unique people and places. While he is most known for his sublime woodblock prints, Baumann let out his playful side with character-filled marionette puppets. First made to entertain his daughter, they soon took over his house. He and his wife, Jane Henderson Baumann, started putting on shows which became the greatest delight to the city’s children.
“Miniatures” from the amazing Craft in America series, tells the tale of Gustave Baumann applying his craftsman’s hand to arts as small and large as puppet-making, printing, and furniture making. This colorful documentary also features Mark Murphy, Alexander Girard, Leandro Gómez Quintero, and other artists whose work focuses our eyes on the world found in the smallest detail.
