Should You Start An Online Digital Service? A Discussion About How and Why

We are watching a shift in the entertainment space from linear broadcasters to audiences cutting the cord and going to VOD/streaming. The audience for digital platforms is growing exponentially and is becoming real competition for broadcasters.

Looking around the globe, both Europe and Asia have robust digital platforms/streamer ecosystems. Quebec has a number of growing digital platforms. But English language Canada doesn't. I'm talking about independent digital services, not the American services like Netflix or Amazon (their funding is through the US, even if they have subscribers in Canada) and not the CRTC licensed digital services, like Crave and CBC Gem (their funding is through their parent broadcaster allocations from the Canadian government).

There are a few English independent digital platforms that are just starting but it's still early days and therein lies the opportunity for more to be created, perhaps even based out of BC.
I would like to discuss the pros and cons and hows and whys one may want to consider making a digital platform. Some of the thought nuggets to talk about may include:
*What are the content areas it may focus on?
*Where will the content come from?
*Where and how to market it?
*Will anyone come watch?
A lot of people will have ideas and opinions on how they can succeed; conversely, I can think of a number of challenges for them. Let's discuss!

PS: I have talked about starting a Vertical Short Drama mobile APP in the past and got as far as to figure out the technical aspect of creating it. But after writing a business plan for it, I realized that I am not interested in running it. It needs a full-time CEO and I'm more interested in becoming a full-time filmmaker.
