COURSES
Note the distances are straight line distances between the controls; you'll run further!
YELLOW: 2.2 km and 25 m climb. Suitable for juniors with some experience or for supervised newcomers, and for family groups.
ORANGE: 3.2 km and 80 m climb. Suitable for adult beginners and experienced juniors.
RED: 5.3 km and 150 m climb. Longer, but less challenging navigationally. Ideal for runners new to orienteering. You still need to be able to read a map, but it is more like an unmarked trail race.
LIGHT GREEN: 4.0 km and 130 m climb. More challenging; for improvers and those with a bit of experience. Most controls away from paths and more route choice options.
GREEN: 5.1 km and 190 m climb. As challenging as the planner can make it. Only for those with experience at orienteering. More navigation.
Note Shotover is pretty hilly, so the climb indicates there are some hills to climb! It's also quite a tricky orienteering area, so don't overestimate your ability.
If you're a runner trying orienteering for the first time, the Red course is ideal - it's fairly easy, navigation-wise, so you won't get lost, and you'll probably run 6 to 6.5km doing it; if that's too much, then Orange might be more suitable (same difficulty, just shorter).
For family groups, we recommend the Orange course, or Yellow if you want something shorter.
For juniors, Yellow is a good course, though juniors new to the sport should be accompanied.
