Our fight pervades: Queer activism in a transnational context

We are thrilled to present two short documentaries on June 29 in Frankfurt am Main. Wu Laobai’s Lover (2023) documents the social art practice concerning “conversion therapy” in China, using the lens to approach the difficulties, joys, and sorrows during the process. Regarding queer activism in a transnational context, Chinese lesbian activist and filmmaker Shi Tou invites us to experience a moment of déjà vu in her Dyke March (2004), filmed twenty years ago in San Francisco. Decades later, how does the new generation of queer feminists resonate with this memory of struggle?

In that case, we are also preparing something special for this event: a short film made by ourselves, friends of a chosen family, about the pride marches, demonstrations, and protests we have participated in. You are welcome to join us, and maybe get ready for our next fight!

Lovers, Wulaobai, 2023, 32 mins, documentary, China

The Lovers is an art project aimed at reversing the "treatment" of homosexuality in China, initiated by artist Wu Laobai and gay policeman Lin Gully. In collaboration with various affirmative action organizations, counselors and related practitioners in China, they distilled three sentences based on the Chinese Diagnosis and Classification of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (CCMD-3) and the World Health Organisation's statement, and printed them on three red vans. They set off from Shanghai and toured six cities before arriving in Beijing, where they paid unannounced visits to nine organizations that have been proven to be doing "treatment" for reversal.

The film documents the discriminatory remarks made by the counselors/psychiatrists and the difficulties encountered by the three vans during the tour. At the same time, the film shows how we can still make connections and take action in response to the limited space.

《恋人》是一个针对中国同性恋扭转“治疗”的艺术项目，由艺术家武老白和同志警察林壑共同发起。他们与中国多个平权组织、心理咨询师及相关从业者共同协作，根据《中国精神疾病诊断与分类系统第三版》(CCMD-3)及世界卫生组织的声明，提炼出三句话，并分别印制在三辆红色货车上。他们从上海出发,沿途巡游了六座城市，最后抵达北京，并暗访了九家已被证实在做扭转“治疗”的机构。

本短片记录了某些心理咨询师/精神医师的歧视性言论，及三辆货车在现场巡游时遇到的困境。同时，透过短片也可以看到在有限的空间中，我们还可以做出怎样连接及行动予以回应。

In San Francisco, the world famous ‘Gay city ’, every June is their month of pride. The homosexuals all over the world come here to celebrate it. At the end of June one day is special for the Dykes, they gather at Mission Park and have their long march together. In the front the women drive the motos with their lovers, then followed by the pedestrians. All the rainbow flags fly over the streets, standing for the girls colorful like it and free like it, including the community worker, the political dissi­dences, the sexual workers. They meet many supporters on their way, such as the old, the gays and their family.The claim of the Dykes is freedom, equality, peace.

The director has participated in this march and recorded it. It’s the friendliest day; no one refused the camera lens.

在人称同性恋之都的美国旧金山，每年的6月是同性恋自豪月，有来自世界各地的人们投入其中。6月底专门有一天是女同志的游行日，大家汇集到Mission公园，然后一起出发，最前面开道的是骑各种摩托车的女人们，可以载上自己的爱人朋友，然后是以步行为主的人们。整个街道飘扬着象征同性恋的彩虹旗，这是真正如七彩般多元的女性们的自由参与，还有社区工作者，持不同政见者，性工作者等等。途中会遇到许多支持者——老人，共同领养孩子的男同志，家人朋友们。女同志游行的主张：自由平等和平

作者从个人角度参与并纪录了这次游行，这是最友好的一天，没有人拒绝镜头，而平时是不可能这么自由地拍摄的。
