DAVID REVIEWS Presents...

Shop Talk: Trust in the Process

On Monday May 6th, DAVID REVIEWS editor Jason Stone returns to the Paradise Theatre to interrogate another stellar line-up from the world of advertising and beyond.

Our discussion this year will concern itself with 'Trust in the Process' as we explore the importance of placing trust in one another in a bid to navigate the complex task of turning a client brief into a sparkling and engaging film.

Jason will be joined by John Rocco (Global Marketing Head: Scotiabank/Tangerine), Jay Chaney (Partner/CSO at Broken Heart Love Affair), Francesco Grandi (CCO of Ogilvy Canada) and celebrated directors Natalie Rae and Miles Jay, with each providing a perspective on what it takes to get great work made.

Jason Stone (Owner/Editor, David Reviews)

Jason Stone has been championing great work as editor of DAVID REVIEWS for twenty years. Along the way, he has acquired an undeserved reputation for outspokenness, and an entirely deserved reputation for persuading charismatic people to say interesting things.

John Rocco (Global Marketing Head: Scotiabank/Tangerine)

Mine has been a journey of learning: I’ve had the good fortune to work through some of the most transformative eras of marketing. Through leadership roles at Scotiabank, Target, Loblaws, Indigo, and others, my career has been shaped by driving inspiring teams toward massive brand transformations. I’ve seen amazing things happen when we combine data science and technology with the art of marketing and storytelling.
The craft of storytelling and building emotional connections with customers is what gets me on the train every morning.
Also. Fun fact. Doing my PHD in marketing at the moment.

Jay Chaney (Partner & CSO, BHLA)

A known challenger, Chaney is a founder of Broken Heart Love Affair - a Canadian creative agency focused on brand transformation and brand domination with a mission to bring the love back to advertising for consumers, clients and the creative and production community. The agency won Silver Newcomer in Ad Age’s Small Agency, Small Agency of the Year (2022) and Gold Best Small Agencies to Work (2024) from Ad Age. BHLA has completely changed the structural approach to advertising while leading the charge on changing the economics of it.

Jay was listed by Ad Age as one of 4 top Planners in the world (2018). He is known for pushing the limits of advertising, redefining and championing the strategy and planning role in Canada and believing in the power of production as a core element of connecting with audiences. He has contributed to several internationally game-changing and award-winning campaigns; including, SickKids ‘VS’, Kruger Paper Products’ ‘Unapologetically Human’, Honey Nut Cheerios ‘Bring Back the Bees’, Royal Ontario Museum’s ‘Immortal’, and McDonald’s ‘Our Food Your Questions’, which set a global standard for transparency in advertising.

Jay was previously CCO at KOHO and CSO at Cossette. He has also held strategy roles at Lg2, Tribal DDB, Critical Mass, and Blast Radius. He is formerly Chair of the Strategy Program at Toronto’s Miami Ad School.

Francesco Grandi (CCO, Ogilvy Canada)

Francesco is the CCO of Ogilvy Canada and day to day creative lead on the TD account. Prior to that, his experience has taken him from Chicago to Amsterdam to London. He has worked on some of the most iconic brands in the world, such as Dove, Guinness, Netflix, Uber and BMW – using creativity as a force to help them achieve their growth goals. Multidisciplinary thinking is at the heart of everything Francesco does, which allows him to solve complex business problems. Francesco has won over 300 awards, including Gold or Grand Prix at every major show. Yet he loves nothing more than when real people talk about his work.

Natalie Rae (Director)

Natalie is an award-winning director working across commercial, music video and documentary mediums. Natalie’s strength is in balancing large scale storytelling with intimate human truths – her work is disarming, expressive and emotionally-driven. She has directed world class campaigns for major clients including Nike, Adidas, Lululemon and Uber; and collaborated with artists including Dua Lipa, H.E.R., Anderson Paak, Drake and Leon Bridges. As of late, Natalie is best known for the success of her debut feature documentary DAUGHTERS, which won both the U.S. Documentary Audience Award and the Festival Favorite Award at Sundance 2024, secured a deal with Netflix and is currently in the midst of an international festival run.

Natalie grew up in Vancouver, Canada and now resides in LA. She is represented commercially by Object+Animal and OPC.

Miles Jay (Director)

Recognized as a generational talent, Miles’ work speaks for itself. A visual storyteller with a directorial eye, his distinctive filmic voice permeates everything he does – approaching stories with unrivaled humanity and a relentless focus on craft rarely seen in commercials. Career highlights include being twice nominated at the DGA’s for commercial directing; a Grammy nomination for his Leon Bridges music video ‘River’; directing a celebrated Squarespace Superbowl campaign starring John Malcovich which earned him three Gold Lions in Cannes for Direction and an Emmy; writing/directing ‘Smile’ for Jay Z which took home the Grand Prix for Entertainment at the Cannes Lions Festival; and helming a viral Heineken x James Bond campaign ft. Daniel Craig which Fast Company lauded as “easily the best commercial in of their 8 film, 23-year dance.”

Miles grew up in Vancouver, Canada and now lives in New York City. He is represented commercially by Smuggler, Anorak, Diplomats and OPC.
