Fujifilm Hands-On Experience
This workshop is being presented in conjunction with the Fujifilm team, giving attendees a unique opportunity to experience the incredible capabilities of the Fujifilm GFX System during the class.
Participants will have the chance to shoot with the GFX cameras and lenses during the hands-on portion of the workshop, allowing them to see firsthand the remarkable detail, dynamic range, and rendering that medium format files are known for.
Because of this opportunity, Focus Camera will be providing memory cards for attendees so they can capture images during the workshop and take those files home for closer inspection. Seeing the results of medium format lighting work on your own screen later is often where the true power of the system becomes most apparent.
Class Description
Taking your lighting skills outside introduces a completely different set of challenges—and creative opportunities. In On Location – Taking Strobes Outside, photographer and educator JC Carey of JCPhotoMedia builds on the core concepts introduced in his popular “From Fear to Flash” class and brings them into the real world of outdoor photography.
A core idea that runs through this class is the concept of process over recipe. Instead of memorizing rigid lighting setups that only work in very specific situations, JC focuses on teaching a repeatable way of thinking about light. This allows photographers to adapt their lighting regardless of location, weather, time of day, or subject distance.
While many photographers are comfortable working with available light, adding strobes on location allows you to shape, balance, and control light in ways that natural light alone simply can’t achieve.
During the workshop, participants will explore how to balance ambient light with strobes in a variety of real-world scenarios.
Topics Covered
• High Speed Sync (HSS) to maintain creative aperture choices in bright conditions
• Rear Curtain Sync for adding motion and dynamic energy to images
• Light placement strategies that help maintain natural-looking results
• Modifier selection and how wind, space, and distance influence your choices
• Understanding the trade-offs between soft light and more controlled light when working outdoors
Outdoor photography often requires photographers to adapt quickly. Wind can turn large modifiers into sails, and shooting from greater distances may require different lighting approaches than those used in a studio. This class will help photographers understand how to make those decisions quickly while still achieving strong, intentional lighting.
This is a hands-on class, meaning participants will actively work with lighting gear, experiment with modifiers, and practice positioning lights in real-world scenarios. The goal is to move beyond theory and help photographers build practical confidence using strobes outside.
Attendees should already have a basic understanding of camera settings—including ISO, aperture, and shutter speed—so the class can focus on lighting technique and creative application rather than camera fundamentals.
By the end of the session, participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to confidently take strobes on location and use them to enhance—not fight against—the natural light around them.
Hands-On Gear Experience
Focus Camera will be providing memory cards for all attendees, so everyone will be able to capture images during the workshop and take their files home for review.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own cameras and lenses so they can practice these lighting techniques using the gear they already work with.
This event is presented in collaboration with the teams from Fujifilm and Westcott. Alongside instructor JC Carey, John Haggerty will be on-site, giving attendees the opportunity to explore select Fujifilm cameras and lenses while working hands-on with Westcott lighting gear and modifiers throughout the workshop.
Instructor Bio
JC Carey is a professional photographer, educator, and lighting specialist behind JCPhotoMedia, as well as a member of the Westcott lighting team.

With experience working both in studio environments and on location, JC specializes in making lighting concepts accessible for photographers who may feel intimidated by flash and strobe equipment. His teaching emphasizes process over fixed setups, helping photographers understand how to evaluate a scene and intentionally add light.
JC regularly teaches workshops, photo walks, trade shows, and educational events across the country. His philosophy centers around experimentation, collaboration, and hands-on learning—encouraging photographers to move beyond relying solely on natural light and instead take full control of their images.
