Nearly 2000 years ago England was invaded by the Roman army who brought with them materials and technologies far beyond that of the Iron Age people that inhabited the country.
Whilst roads to help with the trading of items were created and villas were built to house the incoming settlers, what happened to the inhabitants of small settlements such as those in the Stour valley? Were they eager to take on the Roman tradition? Did they merely take on the things that suited their needs? Or did they simply live alongside the Romans rather than integrating with them? Excavations in and around the Stour valley have revealed local trading centres, burial grounds, villas, roads and farmsteads that help us to build a picture of our local area during this period of change. Our talk by local archaeologist Bekky Hillman will visit Dorn, Stretton-on-Fosse and the Roman farmstead that was found alongside Campden Rd, Shipston.
From 1st February, £5 tickets available in advance from Richard Harveys, Church Street, Shipston-on-Stour. Tickets are also available from Eventbrite and on the door which opens at 2:15pm to start at 2:30pm.
