We look forward to gathering for the 28th annual Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi ceremony on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2026. In line with our theme, “Many Rivers, One Ocean,” the ceremony provides a space for people of all backgrounds to come together as a community and remember fallen military members and loved ones, in a spirit of reflection, gratitude and healing.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
🏝️ VIEW THE CEREMONY.
The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. Whether it’s your first time, or you’ve come every year, all are welcome to take part at Ala Moana Beach Park. This event is free to the public.
For those participating remotely, the ceremony will be shown by our broadcast partner, @khonnews, and livestreamed on YouTube and our website.
🌊 FLOAT A LANTERN.
Individual Lanterns are available free of charge at the Lantern Request Tent on the day of the ceremony, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or while supplies last.
There is no cost to receive a lantern, they are distributed first-come, first-served, one per family or group.
Military personnel may show ID to access a dedicated line.
✍️ WRITE A REMEMBRANCE.
If you choose not to float your own lantern, you may write messages of remembrance for the Collective Remembrance Lanterns at the beach, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
You may also submit your message online for the Collective Remembrance Lanterns ahead of time on our website: (https://lanternfloatinghawaii.com/remembrance/). Please submit before midnight on Sunday 5/24.
Note that Collective Remembrance Lanterns are the larger wooden lanterns set afloat from canoes by volunteers.
