About this Event

Thursday 13 October, 10:00-12:00

Shining a Light on Secondary Breast Cancer, in partnership with Make 2nds Count for Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day

People living with genetic disorders and cancers are at the heart of our research at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, the University of Edinburgh.

Join us for this onsite event, within the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, to find out about our research on Secondary Breast Cancer. Hear from a patient sharing their experiences and insights of living with Secondary Breast Cancer and find out why Make 2nds Count fund this vital research, which is so urgently needed.

Once diagnosed, the average life expectancy of a secondary breast cancer patient is between two and three years. In the UK, approximately 12,000 people a year die from this disease.

For people living with secondary breast cancer, timely access to drugs and other treatments is vital. Every patient should have access to any treatment, including clinical trials. Research on secondary breast cancer is vital in order to save lives and develop effective, new and personalised treatments, so that people with secondary breast cancer live longer and have a better quality of life.

Make 2nds Count funds research undertaken by Dr Olga Oikonomidou to better understand secondary breast cancer by identifying the specific gene changes (mutations), that drive cancer cell growth in individual patients. It focuses on a class of drugs called CDK 4/6 inhibitors, which have been one of the most important developments in treatments for metastatic breast cancer over the past 20 years. The team is analysing blood samples (liquid biopsy) from patients with metastatic breast cancer, looking for measurable biological changes that indicate whether the patient is responding to specific drug treatments. By sequencing the tumour DNA found in blood samples from patients treated with these drugs, Olga’s research team hope to identify specific changes and understand which patients are likely to respond best to treatment with CDK4/6 inhibitors.

Joining instructions will be emailed prior to the event.
