Step into a world where colour, creativity and community take centre stage. You’re invited to the Grand Opening of Shimmer — an extraordinary new exhibition by acclaimed contemporary artist Gerwyn Davies, created in proud collaboration with Open Doors Youth Service, Queensland’s only LGBTQIA+SB Youth Service.

Presented as part of MELT Festival 2025, Shimmer is the culmination of a series of creative workshops where young trans and gender diverse people worked side-by-side with Gerwyn to dream, design and bring to life vibrant handmade costumes. These creations have been transformed into dazzling photographic portraits that celebrate chosen visibility, identity, and the safety of being truly seen.

Known for his theatrical approach to photography, Gerwyn fuses sculptural costuming, vivid colour palettes and stylised settings to produce images that are both playful and profound. In Shimmer, every portrait tells a story of self-expression, resilience and the power of community to uplift and protect its own.

At the Grand Opening, you’ll be among the very first to experience this landmark exhibition in the Museum’s Fairfax Gallery. Hear directly from the artist, young creatives, and project partners about the journey behind these works. Join us in celebrating the vibrancy and strength of some of our city’s most courageous young people and the incredible vision they’ve brought to life.
