Event #1
Shilpkala: A Day When Clay Comes Alive!
Art of Clay Sculpting [Shilpkala] as a Cultural Experience of Eastern India
As India celebrates monsoons, a wave of joy transforms farmlands, the landscapes are all rejuvenated and the weather changes! As the rains retreat, the cyclical farming and harvest take on fresh colours as many parts of India also get ready for our annual festivals. Aaah Autumn and then Winters—are on their way…Ganeshutsav, Navratri, Diwali, Christmas Carnivals, Sankrantis et al….
And coming up first is the unmistakable buzz of Durga Puja preparations, that transforms Eastern India, from Bengal to Bihar, Jharkhand to Tripura, Assam to Odisha!
Join the storytellers of DBF/HCF for an exclusive walk unlike any other in the capital - in the heart of CR Park, the Bengali quarter of Delhi, where the atmosphere is similarly charged with excitement as the idol-makers workshops, the pandal makers, our homes and markets, all get ready to welcome Devi Durga!
Step into Delhi’s Kumor Tuli — the idol-maker’s workshop—and discover how a humble lump of clay is lovingly transformed into the Divine Goddess!
Interact with potters and artisans to understand the intricate and symbolic process of idol-making—try your hand at it with your children!
Learn about the fascinating evolution of Durga Puja—from its mythological roots, to historical and modern-day practices.
Watch clay being used as a craft element to being used as a building material.
A family activity as we connect art craft architecture and mythology through a show and tell game.
Explore the bustling Bengali markets prepping for the big celebration to learn about the many local foods of Eastern India!
Relish a traditional Bengali Jol-Khabar (breakfast) served fresh.
This is not just a Heritage walk but an immersive experience for a family as you interact and indulge together…so come feel the rhythm of the drums, the scent of incense, the taste of tradition and the warmth of a Bengali welcome!
Note: Breakfast is pre-arranged so advance booking is compulsory.
(The presentation will be done in English and Hindi!!!)
