About this Event
Want to kick back, grab a bowl of popcorn, and have a laugh?
A panel of appalachian comics and performers will be doing live commentary on VP Candidate JD Vance's 2020 biopic, Hillbilly Elegy.
Hillbilly Elegy masquerades as a thoughtful reflection on Appalachian life, but instead it reduces a rich and complex culture to a stereotype of dysfunction and despair. J.D. Vance exploits his roots for personal gain, presenting himself as a spokesperson for the region while using his platform to pander to elitist narratives that blame the people of Appalachia for their struggles.
The movie capitalizes on the pain of his upbringing, only to betray the identity he claims by pushing political views that are more concerned with his own ambition than any genuine understanding of the region or its challenges.
We're here to roast his movie.
Appalachia is our home. Even though Huntsville is all the way down in the foothills of our beautiful mountain range, we're still Appalachian in a way JD Vance could never hope to understand.
