JUNE 6TH, 2026 during the annual ever wonderful Oshkosh gallery walk, jambalaya arts new performing arts space "The Jamb" will be having its very first fine arts showing with barbara Wilson's first solo art exhibition "SHE'S NOT PERFORMING"She Is Not Performing is rooted in the energy of my friends and punk, alternative women. The colors and textures of their hair, fashion, and surroundings influence how I paint and my undying passion for creating. I emphasize saturated colors and large-scale surfaces to celebrate and explore their self-expressions and independence, and by applying paint with a sense of immediacy and spontaneity, I give voice to the essence of each person. The subjects of my portraiture are individuals who accept themselves unapologetically and consciously live their lives with purpose. Through formal means, I use portraiture to celebrate who they are.
The title She Is Not Performing is meant to flip the traditional art history trope of “the muse.” Historically, women in portraiture were solely painted as passive subjects to be gawked at by men. The women in my work are disinterested in being idealized and emphasize autonomy over beauty standards and conformity. The title also goes against the stereotype that women who dress in punk, alternative fashion are “doing it for attention” or performing in some disingenuous way. Punk fashion and outwardly expressing yourself is a direct “fuck you” to conforming to oppressive systems meant to keep us small and ignorant. My work aims to solidify this fact as well as celebrate my subjects for being their punk, bad ass selves.
