Wounded Bear Medicine is leading this special Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Course for the SheJumps community!
About this Event

The WFR course is the ideal medical training for outdoor professionals and avid recreators. It provides essential training in wilderness medicine, leadership, and critical thinking for remote environments. To help build these skills, SheJumps is excited to partner with Wounded Bear Medicine to offer a Women's Wilderness First Responder (WFR) class October 23-27. This course costs $895.

Course Structure

This course will be run with using a hybrid model, utilizing online learning prior to the official course start, followed by 5 days of in-person learning to put those skills to practice. The hybrid wilderness first responder is suited for those new to wilderness medicine as well as those with some previous medical experience. The online learning modules are designed with multiple learning preferences in mind. Interactive videos, readings, self-practice assignments, quizzes, and case studies prepare students to apply the curriculum during in-person drills and scenarios. The online learning portion typically takes 20-40 hours to complete. Sign up early to get started with your online learning! Course registration closes on October 15th in order to leave adequate time for completing the onling learning portion prior to the in-person class.

Course Content

During the course, students learn the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments for days and weeks if necessary.

Curriculum includes:

  • Prevention and identification of medical emergencies
  • Risk management
  • Patient assessment
  • CPR in a remote setting
  • Basic life support

  • Practical skills including splinting, bandaging, litter packaging and medical kit preparation
  • WMA wilderness protocols including wound cleaning and exploration, spine injury assessment, dislocation reduction, and anaphylaxis and asthma.

Certifications: Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a 3-year Wilderness First Responder certification and certification of CPR taught to an equivalent health care provider level.

Come learn these vital skills in a welcoming environment! Wounded Bear Medicine will be donating a portion of each registration to SheJumps. This course will be taught at the Teton County Search and Rescue Hangar in Jackson. We love Search and Rescue!

Payment Details

To reserve your spot on this course, please purchase an Eventbrite deposit ticket at checkout. This deposit is $100. SheJumps will invoice you for the remainder of the course fee ($795) after you register. We are taking this route to avoid Eventbrite fees - they are quite high and add on about 15% to the ticket price. Follow-up invoicing will help us avoid this so you won't pay additional fees on top of a high-cost course. We will send you an invoice via email within 7-14 days after your initial deposit is paid for the course. Payment must be received in full by October 15th.

Scholarship

Backcountry Zero has so graciously donated one scholarship spot for this course. If you are interested in this course, but cost is a limiting factor, you can apply for the scholarship here. All scholarship applications are due by September 25th. The goal of the scholarship is to help develop women leaders in the backcountry medicine field and expand their impact on their communities.
