Sheffield Coach to Shut Down Hassockfield Centre demonstration - 17th Oct
Thousands of people are being detained in Pr*son-like conditions, facing isolation, trauma, and severe harm to their mental health, for not having the right passport or visa.
Instead of shutting these centres down, the UK government is expanding the detention estate, with plans to carry out more immigration raids leading to further detentions and deportations.
Hassockfield, renamed Dewentside Immigration Removal Centre (IRC), opened in December 2021, in Durham. It was initially intended to become the main IRC for women in the UK. The IRC holds accomodiation for around 80 women, and though not necessarily at full capacity, those detained have all been held on indefinite detention.
With Sheffield being the UK's first City of Sanctuary, we invite you to show solidarity with our sisters detained in Durham. Join us on the coach organised by South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group (SYMAAG), on October 17th at 9am, leaving from Paternoster Row opposite Showroom Cafe!
