About this Event
Instructor - Rachel Mello
Rachel Mello (she/her) has been an artist, designer, educator, and color consultant for over 20 years. Her mixed-media constructions build out of her background in theatrical scenic art and set design and her love for the quirky, playful, and weird.
She has created exhibits for the USS Constitution Museum and Boston Children's Museum; has taught at Boston Architectural College, Emerson College, and Cambridge Center Adult Education; exhibited and sold her fine art out of galleries throughout New England in addition to art fairs, commission work, and grant supported work for Burning Man. She joined Artisan's Asylum to expand her access to equipment, new skills, and artist community.
Class Description
Starting with pre-cut silhouettes of Sharks, students will learn to use sheet bending tools and the spot welder to create dimension and add fins and hooks. Students will then clean,
sandblast, and powder coat their pieces to make long-lasting wall hangings while learning these valuable tools of finishing steel.
Material Fee
The materials fee for this class is $40. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor, at the end of class. Students may bring their own clean NIOSH labeled N95 or better mask and reduce the materials fee by $5. This instructor accepts payment in cash or through Venmo. If the materials fee creates a barrier to participation, please email the instructor.
Class Goals
Students will learn:
- sheet metal bending
- spot welding
- sandblasting
- powder coating
Material Supplied
Sheet steel, blasting media, coating powders, disposable PPE
Students Should Bring
Wear closed-toe shoes, with no loose or dangling sleeves or cords. Be prepared to tie long hair back.
Prerequisites
All students must be 16 years old or older. Students under 16 must be accompanied by an under the direct supervision of a responsible adult.
