Celebrating the Voices of Living Female & Nonbinary Composers
Addressing Gender Inequities in Classical Music Programming The 4th Annual She Scores Concert Series
Despite their immense talents, female-identifying and nonbinary composers have faced systemic barriers to having their works programmed and performed at major institutions. She Scores represents an endeavor to counteract this longstanding inequity and create a more inclusive landscape for contemporary classical music.
Launched in 2021 by the Local 4 Music Fund, this annual concert series provides a crucial platform to living composers who have been historically underrepresented due to gender disparities. By showcasing their innovative compositional voices, She Scores seeks to cultivate greater equity within the regional arts community.
From May 30th through June 2nd, 2024, audiences are invited to experience the expansive creative scope of 31 composers:
Nora Farley, Ellen Ruth Harrison, Sum Yee Lee, Katelyn Marcelli, Yan Pang, Kirsten Strom, devon osamu tipp, Mickie Wadsworth, Chloe Arnold, Erin Busch, Gala Flagello, Karen Griebling, Alexis Lamb, Annick Odom, Rachelle Ryan, Elizabeth Start, Jennifer Conner, Anna Higgins, Yuki Huang, Ye-Chong Jeon, Suzanne Sorkin, Mengxue Tan, Margi Griebling-Haigh, Cara Haxo, Siyuan Kang, Amelia Kaplan, Indigo Knecht, Mutien Lai, Eunji Lee, Marina Lopez, and Yi Yao.
Pre-concert lectures will be delivered by Dr. Emily Laurance at 6pm May 30-June 1, and 3pm June 2nd.
These works offer a prism into the multitude of stylistic perspectives, influences, and artistic identities that remain inadequately represented in classical music programming. These performances celebrate composers whose artistic contributions deserve to be recognized among the vanguard of modern composition.
Admission is free to the entire concert series, made possible through the generous support of Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, the Gund Foundation, the Bascom Little Fund, Ohio Arts Council, and the Music Performance Trust Fund.
She Scores serves as an opportunity to both discover underrepresented composers and engage with the imperative to address long-standing gender inequities. By experiencing these concerts, audiences can partake in expanding the boundaries of whose stories and creative voices are centered in classical music.
